UN chief condemns Israeli attack on UN peacekeepers

VIENTIANE, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned an Israeli forces attack in south Lebanon that injured two Indonesian military personnel who are members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
“This incident is intolerable and cannot be repeated,” Guterres said at a press conference after talks with Southeast Asian leaders at the ASEAN summits held in Laos.
“I condemn the fact that there was a shooting against a UN premise, wounding two peacekeepers, which is a violation of international humanitarian law,” the UN secretary general said.
“We see an enormous tragedy in Lebanon, we must do everything to avoid an all-out war in Lebanon,” Guterres said.
On Thursday, UNIFIL said that an Israeli tank fired on a watchtower in its headquarters in Naqoura, injuring two personnel. UNIFIL has around 10,000 peacekeepers stationed in south Lebanon. ■
